The Gallery at the Sutter Theater Center for the Arts Presents

Pam Nowak and Her “Fancy Flights”

At this month’s Theater Art Gallery opening reception we will welcome in another outstanding local artist, Pam Nowak (pr. “no-vack”). Pam is the recently retired art department chair at Yuba City High School. During her summer abroad in Italy, where she taught English to young Italian students using art as the vehicle to learn another language, she had some personal time to work on a whole new collection of work. Her “Fancy Flights” paintings of hummingbirds is the result and the collection will delight all viewers.

Stop by and meet Pam and other fantastic artists and art minded people in the Gallery at the Sutter Theater Center for the Arts’ free opening reception on Friday, October 20 from 5-7pm, 754 Plumas Street in Yuba City. Appetizers, beer, and wine will be served. The show is on display throughout the month of October.

Hummingbirds in art have been popular subjects for centuries. Exclusively found in the New World, hummingbirds also feature prominently in indigenous cultures. Audubon chronicled several species in his “Birds of America,” and 19th century American artist Martin Johnson Heade portrayed many species in lush, tropical settings. Images of these tiny creatures with iridescent feathers are revealed though every artistic outlet available. Pam latest monograph, “Fancy Flights,” though based on actual hummingbirds, are more like fantasy birds. Pam’s use of metallic watercolors gives them the iridescence of the real-life birds that are her inspiration.

The Theater Gallery located inside the Sutter Theater Center for the Arts is also home to several Anchor Artists. See original works of art created by metal sculpture artist, Dude Green, indigenous jewelry and beadwork artist, Jesse Harris, photographer George Unpingco and ceramist Drew Sallee.
