Screening of The Wizard of Oz Kicks of the New

“Fourth Friday at the Burrows” Series

This month Yuba Sutter Arts & Culture kicks off its new 4th Friday at the Burrows series with a screening of the film The Wizard of Oz. Join Dorothy, the Lion, the Tinman, the Scarecrow, and Toto too!  There will also be a costume contest for all ages starting at 6 pm before the film begins for those wishing to dress up as their favorite character.  “Come out, come out wherever you are,” and “follow the yellow brick road” for a family-friendly evening of fun and nostalgia. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students under 18 at yubasutterarts.org.

Why show The Wizard of Oz now? Because 2024 marks the 85th anniversary of the film’s premiere and theaters all over the county are showing it so why not here? Although the 1939 Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer film is the best-known dramatization of the Wizard of Oz, it was not the first production. In June 1902, an extravagantly mounted stage adaptation opened in Chicago to great critical acclaim. The stage play and film are adaptations of the children\’s book, \”The Wonderful Wizard of Oz,\” written by L. Frank Baum and published in 1900. The film was celebrated not only for its use of technicolor but for its storytelling and songs, which earned it six Academy Award nominations. While the film did not win the Oscar for \”Best Picture,\” Judy Garland\’s rendition of \”Somewhere Over the Rainbow\” earned a \”Best Original Song\” statuette. The film also took home \”Best Original Score.\”

The idea for the 4th Friday at the Burrows series came from community members asking that more programs be presented at our Marysville campus. While YSAC has continued to build programming back up at the Burrows post-pandemic, it felt that a regular event on a given day each month might help improve attendance.  Here’s the 4th Friday at the Burrows schedule for the rest of the year. All programs start at 7 pm unless otherwise noted. On February 26 at 5 pm, YSAC will host the YES Charter Academy Student Art Show and free reception. March 22 is the Improv Club’s Spring Showcase. On April 26, come see The Goonies film on the big screen. The Yuba Sutter Youth Choir presents its Groovy ‘70s Retro concert performance on May 24.  John Paris returns to the Burrows with his Smooth Summer Jazz show on June 28. On July 26, classical guitarist, Michael Geiger, performs along with his Rising Guitar Stars. Enjoy the Mariachi Real Monarcas Trio on August 23. Legendary blues vocalist, Pinkie Rideau performs with her band on September 27. The first season of 4th Friday at the Burrows wraps up on October 25 with the Fall Frenzy show by the Improv Club.
