For over three years, Yuba Sutter Arts & Culture and the Alliance for Hispanic Advancement have been working to create a new youth performing arts program, the Yuba-Sutter Youth Mariachi Orchestra. This ensemble was finally formed over the 2023 fall semester at Yuba Gardens Middle School and Arboga School. There are plans to expand this to other schools in fall 2024. This program is being offered to the students at these schools for free including instruction and instruments.
The orchestra is made up of violins, trumpets, guitars including a higher pitched guitar called a vihuela and an acoustic bass guitar called a guitarrón, and all players will also have the opportunity to take turns singing lead and doing backup vocals.
With another year under their belt, we hope to see the Youth Mariachi Orchestra start to perform locally and regionally!
