A dynamic public art corridor blending murals, historic neon, and community storytelling is coming to town. Yuba Sutter Arts & Culture (YSAC) is proud to announce the launch of Neon Alley, an innovative public art project transforming a once-overlooked alleyway along Plumas Street into a vibrant, immersive cultural destination. Funded by a prestigious grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, the project brings together large-scale murals, restored historic neon signage, and cutting-edge lighting technology to celebrate Yuba City’s rich commercial and cultural past. Neon Alley reimagines the walkway/corridor connecting a public parking area to the Plumas Street shopping and entertainment district as a glowing, walkable outdoor gallery. At its heart are vintage neon signs, collected from iconic, long-gone local businesses, that will be carefully restored and reinterpreted as artistic focal points. These luminous relics will be integrated with new murals, creating a visual timeline that honors the people, places, and stories that shaped the community. The neon signs currently in the possession of YSAC include those that hung adjacent to the Sutter Theater over legendary, long-gone watering holes like The Spur and the Town Pump. Speaking of which, YSAC is in search of additional historic signs from around the community. If anyone has old neon signs or any signs stored away in a barn or garage that might lend themselves to inclusion in the project, please call 530-742-2787 or email david@yubasutterarts.org.
“This project literally brings history to light,” said David Read, YSAC Executive Director. “By blending nostalgia with contemporary design, we are preserving the spirit of Yuba City while creating a bold, engaging space for residents and visitors alike to visit,” he added.
The installation will incorporate modern, energy-efficient LED neon technologies to replicate the warmth and vibrancy of traditional neon while ensuring durability and sustainability. UV-reactive, LED-integrated paint will allow the murals to transform after dark, producing a dynamic nighttime experience that echoes the flickering glow of vintage signage. Interactive QR codes placed throughout the alley will invite visitors to explore the stories behind each sign and mural, connecting art with local history in an accessible, engaging format.
Neon Alley Revival builds on recent public art efforts in the district, including a series of murals completed during a 2024 mural marathon at the Sutter Theater Center for the Arts. Together, these projects are establishing Plumas Street as a growing cultural corridor and creative hub in the region. Beyond its artistic impact, the project is designed to support economic revitalization. The revitalized alley is expected to increase foot traffic, support local businesses, and enhance the overall vibrancy of the downtown environment. Its proximity to nearby schools will also make it a daily point of inspiration for local students, fostering community pride and creative engagement. Design and installation are expected to begin in late Spring, with opportunities for community involvement and artist participation to be announced in the coming weeks.
