Sutter Theater for The Arts

The Sutter Movie Theater was built in 1950 as a traditional movie house and seated just over 900 patrons with one main screen. Over the years it was divided in half and then later, the half nearest Plumas Street was divided into two smaller theaters for a total of three viewing rooms. The original design was not overly ornate but included some Art Deco elements in the lobby. Yuba Sutter Arts & Culture acquired the theater in 2021 and renamed it the Sutter Theater Center for the Arts to show its more expansive offerings beyond simply movie screenings including live music and theater.

Currently, programs are presented in the 150 seat Clark Family Black Box Theater with regular events in the Art Box Gallery, the lobby, and the Projection Room Speakeasy. The vision for Phase II has always been to remodel the remaining half of the original theater into an additional live performing arts space with a traditional raised proscenium arch stage. The plan calls for restoration of the original seats resulting in a final seating capacity of 299. With your support, we can meet our goal for completion and a grand opening event in the Spring of 2025. Be part of what is destined to be an arts and culture oasis for all of Yuba-Sutter.
