Yuba Sutter Arts is pleased to announce the next session of its “Ceramics for Veterans” program. The first series of classes just wrapped up and was held at Yuba Sutter Arts in Marysville. The next session will be held in the Tucker Room at the Veterans Memorial Community Building, 1425 Veterans Memorial Circle in Yuba City. The Tucker Room is on the back side of the building and has its own separate entrance.
The classes will be held once a week on Monday evenings in October starting on October 1st. Class will begin at 6pm and wrap up at 8:30. The session will conclude with a pot luck dinner on October 29that which time the students will receive their finished fired bowls and other objects made in class. The classes are free of charge to Veterans and active duty military and their families. All supplies and tools are included. Previous students are welcome to take the class again.
“The first series of classes just wrapped up and were a great success by any account,” said David Read, YSA Executive Director. “The bowls and other objects created by the Veterans were so varied and wonderful and the joy expressed when each student saw their finished projects was priceless,” he added.
This is a ten-month long program which will includes ceramics classes and related lectures, gallery shows, sales and a fundraiser for local Veterans organizations. Additional upcoming class sessions will be offered at various locations throughout Yuba-Sutter.
Veterans, active duty military and their families are invited to be a part of these workshops and events. Participants will learn the basics of working with clay and hand-building techniques which providesa powerful creative outlet. Veterans will leave with a sense of accomplishment and beautiful finished projects.
Classes are led by well-known northern California ceramic artist, Chris Thompson. Chris is also a U.S Air Force Veteran who served between 1979 and 1989. Chris first worked with Yuba Sutter Arts in 2013 during his “Thousand Bowls” Feed the Hungry public art project.
Ceramics for Veterans is funded by Yuba Sutter Arts and the California Arts Council’s Veterans in the Arts program which is rooted in the Council’s desire to address the needs and improve the lives of California’s Veterans through the arts. Veterans in the Arts seeks to increase equity, access, and opportunities for veterans to participate in quality arts programming that is sensitive and responsive to their unique experiences.
Again, this project is open to all Veterans and their families in Sutter and Yuba Counties at no cost. To register or for additional information, contact David Read at 530-749-8065 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
