Celebrating Arts Education Month at Yuba Sutter Arts

Since the first of the year, our community has been celebrating the creative richness of local high school students.  Following recent “standing room only” Poetry Out Loud and Scholastic Art & Writing Awards events, Yuba-Sutter will once again be able to experience the remarkable artistic output of two of our premier high school art departments.

Yuba Sutter Arts is kicking off its March Arts in Education Month activities with two blockbuster gallery exhibitions.  It will host the Spring Art Show for both Yuba City High School and River Valley High School.  Be prepared to see and experience eye opening and breath-taking examples of artistic excellence.   You might even see some contenders for this year’s Congressional Art Competition.

The Yuba City High School Student Art Exhibit will be up from March 6 – 15. The show will be curated by Art Department Chair, Pam Nowak.  An opening reception with refreshments will be held on Friday, March 8 from 5 – 7pm.   The River Valley High School Student Art Exhibit is in the Gallery at Yuba Sutter Arts from March 20 – 29.  The show will be curated by Art Department Chair, Whitney Still.  An opening reception with refreshments will again be held on Friday, March 22 from 5 – 7pm.  Both exhibitions will be at the Gallery at Yuba Sutter Arts, 624 E Street in Marysville.

The student art shows help celebrate a whole new generation of artists.  Part of Yuba Sutter Arts’ mission is to promote exposure to the arts and to support art education for the youth in our community.  In his keynote address at the recent Scholastic Art & Writing Awards at the Burrows Theater, John Pimentel, co-founder of the Marysville Charter Academy for the Arts said, “Arts in educational programs have been linked to higher academic achievement, better student engagement, and success in school for a good while. Study after study documents this.”  He added, “Improved academic proficiency is wonderful, but really what is most important about arts education is the development of the whole person, of human beings that are creative, expressive, tolerant, empathetic, and engaged in the world.

The exhibitions and receptions are free to attend.  Gallery hours are Wednesdays from 11-6, Thursday and Friday from 11-4. The Gallery is also accessible by appointment at other times by calling 742-2787 or writing david@yubasutterarts.org.  There is plenty of free street parking and in the parking lots at Umpqua Bank and Bank of America directly adjacent to the theater.
