Ceramics for Veterans | Wheel Throwing
June 30, 2019 at 10:00 am – 1:00 pm
Yuba Sutter Arts is proud to have been chosen to receive a Veterans Initiative in the Arts Grant from the California Arts Council. This past year, over 100 Veterans, active duty military members and their families have been able to learn basic hand building techniques, wheel throwing, glazing and firing techniques.
There will be two final five-week sessions during this grant cycle. We will bring the hand building classes back to Marysville at The Gallery at Yuba Sutter Arts, 624 E Street. Classes will be held on Monday evenings from 6 – 8:30 starting on May 20. We will take Memorial Day off and then hold the final four classes on June 3, 10, 17 and wrap up with a pot luck dinner on June 24.
The final five wheel throwing classes will again be held on Sundays at Chris Thompson’s studio in Sacramento from 10am – 1pm starting on Sunday, June 2 and continuing through June 30. The classes are free and open to Veterans, active duty military, spouses and children. All supplies and tools are included. Previously enrolled students are welcome to take the class again.
Classes are led by well-known northern California ceramic artist, Chris Thompson. Chris is also a U.S Air Force Veteran who served between 1979 and 1989. He went on to earn an MFA in Ceramics from California State University at Sacramento. Chris first worked with Yuba Sutter Arts in 2013 during his “Thousand Bowls” Feed the Hungry public art project.
“Art is about bringing community together,” said Chris. “I believe it can be a unifying force in the social fabric of our society. I enjoy making art that speaks about social awareness or social needs and especially art that supports our Veterans,” he added.
The California Arts Council’s Veterans in the Arts program is rooted in the Council’s desire to address the needs and improve the lives of California’s Veterans through the arts. Veterans in the Arts seeks to increase equity, access, and opportunities for veterans to participate in quality arts programming that is sensitive and responsive to their unique experiences.
Again, this project is open to all Veterans and their immediate families in Sutter and Yuba Counties at no cost. To register or for additional information, contact David Read at 530-749-8065 or email email@example.com.
